Print Size Guide

Choosing the right print size

Our prints range from the compact 6" x 13" Tropical Hideaway paper edition to the sweeping 46" x 114" Twilight Triptych on canvas. This guide explains how our sizes are measured, how to match a print to your room and furniture, how to space a triptych, and what to expect from paper versus canvas. Work through the wall-measurement checklist at the end before you order.

Image size versus finished size

The dimensions listed on each product (for example, 22" x 40") refer to the printed image itself. The finished size on your wall can be larger:

  • Paper prints are usually framed behind glass or acrylic. A frame adds its own width, and a mat board adds several inches on each side. A 22" x 40" paper print with a 3" mat and a 1" frame finishes at roughly 30" x 48".
  • Canvas prints may be hung unframed with the image wrapping the edges, or framed with a thin float frame that adds only a small amount of depth and width. The listed size is close to the finished size either way.
  • Triptychs are displayed as multiple panels with gaps between them, so the total wall width is wider than the listed size. See the spacing section below.

Measure for the finished size, not the image size, when checking a spot on your wall.

Matching a print to your room and furniture

Two rules of thumb cover most situations:

  • Width over furniture: choose artwork about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the piece it hangs above. A sofa that is 84" wide pairs well with art roughly 56" to 63" wide, such as the 28" x 68" Twilight Triptych on paper displayed horizontally or the 32" x 54" Out Island Paradise canvas.
  • Height on the wall: hang the center of the artwork about 57" to 60" from the floor, near average eye level. Above a sofa or console, keep the bottom of the frame about 8" to 10" above the furniture so the pieces read as one grouping.

Smaller prints, like the 10" x 14" Abaco Fish Camp paper edition or the 6" x 13" Tropical Hideaway, work best in pairs or small groupings, on gallery walls, or in tighter spots such as powder rooms, hallways, and between windows.

Spacing a triptych

The Twilight Triptych is designed to hang as a set of panels. To plan its footprint:

  • Keep the gaps between panels even and small, typically 1" to 3". Wide gaps break up the scene.
  • Add the gaps to the total width: for example, two 2" gaps add 4" to the overall wall space needed.
  • Hang the panels so their centers align on one horizontal line, and treat the whole set as a single artwork when choosing the hanging height.
  • Measure the full width, including gaps, before ordering, especially for the 46" x 114" canvas edition, which spans nearly ten feet.

Paper versus canvas

  • Paper offers the traditional framed look: the image sits behind glass or acrylic, often with a mat. It suits formal rooms and gallery walls, but framing adds cost and several inches of finished size.
  • Canvas reads as a single painted piece with no glare, works framed or unframed, and keeps the finished size close to the listed size. It suits casual and coastal spaces and larger statement walls.
  • Several prints, such as Hopetown Harbour II and Tropical Hideaway, are offered in the same size on both paper and canvas, so you can choose by look and framing preference.

Printable wall-measurement checklist

Print this section and take it with your tape measure:

  1. Measure the width of the furniture the art will hang above (if any).
  2. Calculate your target artwork width: about two-thirds to three-quarters of that furniture width, or the width of the open wall section if there is no furniture.
  3. Measure the wall's available width and height, noting outlets, switches, window trim, and sconces.
  4. Check the hanging height: center of the art about 57" to 60" from the floor; bottom of the frame 8" to 10" above furniture.
  5. For paper prints, add mat and frame allowances to the image size to get the finished size.
  6. For a triptych, add the panel gaps to the total width and confirm the full footprint fits.
  7. Mark the footprint on the wall with painter's tape and step back to check the proportions before ordering.
